What Is Angle Steel?
Angle steel, also known as angle iron, is a long strip steel with angles formed at both sides perpendicular to each other. There are two types of angle steel: equal angle steel and unequal angle steel. The two sides of equal angle steel have equal width. Its specifications are represented by the millimeter size of the width × width × thickness.
For example, “∠30×30×3” represents an equal angle steel with a width of 30mm and a thickness of 3mm. It can also be represented by its model number, which is the width in centimeters, such as ∠3#. The model number does not indicate the size of different thicknesses of the same model number.
Therefore, the width and thickness of angle steel should be fully filled in on the contract and other documents to avoid using the model number alone. The specifications of hot-rolled equal angle steel are 2# to 20#.
Angle steel can be used to form various load-bearing components according to different structural needs, or as connectors between components. It is widely used in various building structures and engineering structures, such as roof beams, bridges, transmission towers, lifting and transportation machinery, ships, industrial furnaces, reaction towers, container racks, and warehouse shelves, etc.
Angle steel is a carbon structural steel used for construction. It is a simple section steel and is mainly used for metal components and frame structures of factories. It requires good weldability, plastic deformation performance, and certain mechanical strength during use. The raw material for producing angle steel is low-carbon square steel billet, and the finished product is delivered in the form of hot-rolled shapes, normalized or hot-rolled state.
Types and Specifications of Angle Steel
There are two main types of angle steel: equal angle steel and unequal angle steel, of which unequal angle steel can be further divided into equal thickness and unequal thickness. The specifications of angle steel are expressed in terms of the length and thickness of the sides.
Currently, the specifications of domestically produced angle steel range from #2 to #20, with the number representing the length in centimeters, and the same number of angle steel often has 2-7 different thicknesses.
Imported angle steel indicates the actual size and thickness of both sides and specifies the relevant standards.
Generally, angle steel with a side length of 12.5cm or more is considered large, while those between 12.5cm and 5cm are medium, and those with a side length of less than 5cm are small.
The ordering of imported and exported angle steel is generally based on the required specifications for use, and the steel grade corresponds to the carbon structural steel grade.
In other words, angle steel has no specific composition or performance series other than its specification number. The delivery length of angle steel is divided into fixed length and multiple length, and the fixed length of domestically produced angle steel ranges from 3-9m, 4-12m, 4-19m, and 6-19m depending on the specification number.
The length range for Japanese-made angle steel is 6-15m. The cross-sectional height of unequal angle steel is calculated based on the width of the longer side.
Chemical Composition of Angle Steel
The chemical composition of angle steel belongs to the series of rolled steel materials for general structural use, with the main testing indexes being C, Mn, P, and S. The content of each element varies depending on the grade, with the approximate ranges being C < 0.22%, Mn: 0.30-0.65%, P < 0.060%, and S < 0.060%.
